Bringing in a vehicle from Northern Ireland

If you purchase a vehicle in Northern Ireland and import it to the Republic of Ireland you may be required to complete a customs declaration when you import it to the Republic of Ireland.

There are 2 scenarios where you don’t need a customs declaration:

1. A vehicle that has been in private use in Northern Ireland for a reasonable period of time doesn’t need to clear customs.
2. A vehicle that has already cleared customs (and customs paid) in the North doesn’t need to clear customs in the Republic of Ireland.

In all other scenarios you are required to to complete a customs declaration. Additionally if you do not have sufficient documentation to prove a vehicle fits into one of the scenarios above, you will also need to complete a customs declaration.
