Typically when you import a vehicle from outside the EU (UK, Japan and other countries) to Ireland you are required to pay Customs Duty, VAT & VRT. From a customs perspective importing a vehicle that is a gift is treated differently to inheritance.

Importing a Vehicle I received as a Gift

If you receive a vehicle as a gift and import it to Ireland from outside the EU then you are required to complete a customs declaration and pay customs duty, VAT and VRT.

Importing a Vehicle I received as Inheritance

If you receive a vehicle through inheritance and import it to Ireland from outside the EU then you may be exempt from customs duty, VAT and VRT and therefore you can import the vehicle tax free. You are required to complete an inheritance exemption application and accompany you application with a death cert and a copy of the will showing that you inherited the vehicle.
